A solid roof gives full shade and rain protection, and it carries ceiling fans, recessed lighting, heaters, and a television without exposed wiring.

A pergola filters light and defines a space without closing it in — a good fit beside a pool or over a lounge area. A freestanding pavilion gives full cover away from the house, often as a poolside cabana or kitchen structure.
