A cocktail pool trades swimming distance for seating. Benches line the walls, the water stays shallow, and the whole pool sits close enough to the patio that it becomes part of the conversation. It suits courtyards, narrow lots, and anyone who uses a pool to sit rather than swim.

A sun shelf is a broad, shallow step of the pool floor, sized for in-pool loungers, umbrellas, and bubblers. It is often the most-used part of the water: a place to cool off without swimming and to keep small swimmers close.

A cocktail pool is a small, shallow custom pool built for sitting and talking rather than swimming laps. Bench seating wraps the edge, the water stays shallow, and the footprint usually falls between 8 by 12 and 10 by 20 feet, so it fits a courtyard or a narrow backyard.

A sun shelf is usually built with about 6 to 12 inches of water: enough to cool off lying down, shallow enough for an in-pool lounger to sit flat. Size follows how you will use it. A shelf for one or two loungers can be compact, while our Missouri City pool's broad shelf holds a pair of loungers with room to sit beside them.

Yes. On a small lot the shelf often earns more use than deep water does, so we may give it a larger share of the shell or pair it with a cocktail pool's bench seating. Because gunite is shaped on site, the shelf can follow a tight setback line or wrap a corner.

Most new pools run a few months from excavation to swim-ready, and you get a written schedule during design.
