A Real Pool on a Lot That Cannot Fit One.
Much of Houston's most valuable land comes in small pieces: 5,000-square-foot lots in West University Place and Bellaire, townhome courtyards inside the loop, and patio homes across the suburbs. A plunge pool or cocktail pool is designed for exactly that yard.
Because we build in custom gunite, the pool is shaped to your setbacks and sightlines rather than chosen from a catalog. It gets the same engineering, finishes, and equipment as our full-size pools, in a footprint that leaves room for a patio.
Sized to the Lot
Drawn around your setbacks, easements, and trees, so every usable foot of yard is accounted for.
Seating Built In
Benches, a ledge, and steps are formed into the shell, turning a small pool into a place to gather.
Heated for Year-Round Use
A small volume of water heats fast, so a plunge pool can double as a spa in the cooler months.
Lower Running Cost
Less water means less energy and fewer chemicals than a full-size pool.
Plunge Pool, Cocktail Pool, or Spool?
The three names describe how the pool is used more than how it is built. All are small custom pools; depth, seating, and equipment are what set them apart.
| Format | Typical Size | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Plunge pool | 8 x 12 to 10 x 20 ft | Cooling off and soaking; usually the deepest of the three |
| Cocktail pool | 8 x 12 to 10 x 20 ft | Conversation and entertaining; shallow, with bench seating around the edge |
| Spool | 8 x 10 to 10 x 16 ft | Year-round use; a heated spa-pool hybrid with jets |
In the 2026 Houston market, small-format pools generally run $20,000 to $55,000, with custom gunite builds that add heat, jets, tile, and decking at the upper end or above. These are planning figures, not a quote. For full-size pricing see the Houston Pool Cost Guide.
Why the Price Does Not Shrink With the Pool
A small pool still needs excavation, steel, gunite, plumbing, an equipment pad, electrical service, a permit, and a startup. Those costs barely change with size, so a plunge pool costs more per square foot than a large one.
What you save is in water, decking, and long-term running cost, and you keep the rest of the yard.
Tight Access and Small-Lot Construction
On inner-loop lots the hard part is often getting equipment into the yard. Narrow side yards, neighboring structures, and protected trees all shape how the pool is excavated and built.
We walk the access route before designing, because it determines what can be built and what it will cost.
Features That Fit a Small Pool
A raised wall with a sheer descent, a bubbler on a shallow ledge, LED lighting, and glass waterline tile carry more visual weight in a small pool than a large one.
A heater, spa jets, and app-based automation turn it into a pool you use in January as well as July.
Permits on Small Lots
Setbacks matter most where there is the least room. Cities with their own building departments, West University Place above all, require surveys and additional filings; our Houston pool permit guide explains the differences.
We confirm what your lot allows before you commit to a design, and we file the permit and any HOA submission.

We map setbacks, easements, trees, utilities, and the access route for equipment.

You receive a plan that fits the lot, with finish selections and a free itemized quote.

How We Design a Small Pool.
Small pools leave no room for guesswork, so the first two steps carry most of the work.

Finish the Rest of a Small Yard.
With a compact pool, the patio, shade, and lighting do as much as the water. We design them together so the yard feels larger than it is.
